Every celebrated occasion deserves a perfect sweet finale!
I took a long hiatus from blogging with many new ventures that were happening this summer. One of the new ventures I took on this year was teaching Cake Decorating Workshops for Kids and Adults. I am truly thankful that the Founders at Eau Appreciation Studio have provided me a platform to contribute my skills to give back to the community. The mission at Eau Appreciation Studio is to promote health and wellness through empowering workshops facilitated by experts from different fields to bring more positive energy into our lives and to enable us to appreciate ourselves, our surroundings and eventually to reach the true source of happiness in life.
My workshops are run monthly alternating between Kid’s Workshop and Adult Workshop at Eau Appreciation Studio in Markham. The kid’s workshops are great ways to spend time with your little ones through cookies and cupcakes decorating. Not only do they get to develop their motor skills and dexterity, you get to have fun with your kids without worrying about cleaning up the mess afterwards!
For my Adult Workshops, they serve as great outlets for moms to reclaim some “ME” time. I had a mom telling me at one of my workshops that it has been 6 years since she had dedicated 6 hours to herself with no interruptions or duties call. She truly had a blast and I could tell from her work as well!

The year of 2014 is definitely an exciting year for Shirley’s Sweet Creations. After celebrating our 10th Anniversary with the launch of our new website and new logos, we have entered into exciting partnerships with lots of interesting vendors and local artists to build a one-stop party planning portal for all the busy parents out there and for parents who simply don’t know where to begin. One of our exciting new partners is Treehouse Play Centre located on 9688 Leslie Street in Richmond Hill – an indoor playground designed for children aged 0-8 and equipped with a cafe.
I have delivered to many playgrounds for birthday events over the years, but I have found Treehouse to be drastically different than other party centres. Playground in industrial area, though gigantic in size, are often dark, gloomy and lack pizzazz to their decor. The rooms they offer for the kids to cut their cakes are often small and feel a bit claustrophobic. Treehouse Play Centre on the other hand, is conveniently located in a residential area with welcoming ambiance and ample amount of natural lighting. First time I visited Treehouse, I already had an instant affinity towards this place, so I was beyond excited when owners Cathy and Ophelia have shown an equal interest in promoting my custom cakes and sweets to their clients at Treehouse!
I took part in the Treehouse Play Centre very first “Meet and Greet” event on May 17, 2014. It was a Two-hour event which parents and kids can drop in to play and meet their participating partners. I have created two separate Boys & Girls’ Tables showcasing the most popular themes for kid’s birthday party. Our other new, exciting partner, Derek, the amazing balloon artist from Twisted Inflations , was also one of the showcasing partners at the event and has created an awesome Floor to Ceiling Balloon Castle Wall Decor, a Rose in a Vase Centrepiece and a Balloon Bouquet with a LEGO Ninja twisted creation to compliment my display.
For the Girl’s table, I have chosen a Princess Tea Party theme featuring a more sophisticated, princess dress inspired custom cake topped with an Austrian Crystal Tiara provided by Le Bonbon Tree. Tiered of assorted sweets were created to compliment the table fit for any princess. Each princess is also served with their own cupcake!
For the boys, LEGO is probably the most popular theme with the recent release of the 3D LEGO Movie. I have created a 3-D LEGO Figurine Cake, Blue Cake Pops and Yellow Marshmallow Pops in shape of LEGO Man Head to compliment the Boys’ Table. The kids were especially crazy over those LEGO Man Head Marshmallow pops.
April, 2014 marks the 10th year of Shirley’s Sweet Creations in business! As incredible as it is being my own boss, it is even more amazing to be able to turn my passion in baking and cake decorating into a full time business. I was fortunate and blessed enough to find my true passion early on in my career life and pursue it wholeheartedly. Giving up a field-related job as a research associate in Heroin Addiction Research at CAMH for a physically demanding and underpaid position as a pastry chef was a tough sell to my parents initially. Eventually, I think my perseverance and the creativity they see in my works have convinced them that this is where I shine. My journey of becoming a pastry chef started at George Brown College. The 10-month Baking & Pastry Arts program granted me a solid foundation to take my first steps into professional kitchens. My first baking job was with Marchelino Movenpick. Soon after that, I landed a pastry apprentice position at 360 Restaurant at the CN Tower. I must have left quite an impression during my short stay at 360 that my name somehow was passed on to the executive pastry chef at the Windsor Arms Hotel. It was a dream team of talented chefs under one roof when the hotel reopened in 1999 and I was lucky enough to work and be trained under the direction of Executive Chef, JP Challet and Pastry Chef Extraordinaire, Mark Cheese. After 2 ½ fabulous years at the hotel, it was time to move on as I was turning a new page in life – getting married! In order to be able to juggle between a dream career and a new family life, I chose to take on a no weekends, Monday to Friday cake decorator position at a wholesale bakery where I decorated my first wedding cake. Slowly, I started to get requests from friends and friends of friends to make their wedding cakes. Through words of mouth and taking part in boutique style bridal shows, requests for wedding cakes started to build, so I decided to take the plunge and start Shirley’s Sweet Creations full time. Now many of my wedding couples are entering parenthood， I am delighted to be asked to create their baby shower and birthday cakes for their little ones. My collection of Sweet Creations for Kids has grown to a point that it deserves its own identity. Hence, a new website and new logos are created to celebrate the 10th year milestone and mark the new beginning for Shirley’s Sweet Creations!
